Course Description

The Certified HAZWOPER First Responder Awareness Training (CHFRAT) course provides foundational training for individuals who may encounter hazardous materials incidents and are responsible for recognizing emergencies and initiating the appropriate response. Developed in accordance with OSHA HAZWOPER Standard 29 CFR 1910.120(q), this course prepares participants to identify hazardous substance releases, protect themselves and others, and activate the appropriate emergency response system without attempting to control the release.

Participants will learn the roles and responsibilities of First Responder Awareness personnel, including hazard recognition, risk awareness, emergency notification procedures, scene isolation, and incident reporting. The course covers the identification of hazardous materials, warning signs, labeling systems, exposure risks, and the importance of maintaining a safe distance while supporting emergency response operations.

Emphasis is placed on personal safety, awareness-level response strategies, hazard communication, and regulatory compliance. This certification is ideal for employees, security personnel, maintenance staff, transportation workers, healthcare personnel, public works employees, and anyone who may be the first to recognize a hazardous materials emergency in the workplace or community.

Who Should Attend

Employees who may witness or discover a hazardous material release include security staff, maintenance workers, warehouse personnel, and plant operators. Safety officers and supervisors are responsible for emergency recognition, and all workers requiring regulatory compliance training must complete the HAZWOPER Awareness level.
