Certified Managing Excavation Hazard Technician (CMEH)
Course Description
The Certified Managing Excavation Hazard Technician (CMEH) certification is a specialized safety training program designed to provide employers, supervisors, competent persons, safety professionals, and construction workers with the essential knowledge required to safely manage trenching and excavation operations. This comprehensive course focuses on OSHA excavation safety standards, hazard recognition, protective systems, and safe work practices that help prevent cave-ins, injuries, and fatalities on construction sites.Excavation and trenching remain among the most hazardous construction activities, exposing workers to risks such as cave-ins, falls, falling loads, hazardous atmospheres, underground utilities, water accumulation, and heavy equipment hazards. This course provides participants with a thorough understanding of OSHA Excavation Standards (29 CFR 1926 Subpart P) and the responsibilities of employers and competent persons in maintaining safe excavation operations.
Participants will learn how to identify excavation hazards, evaluate soil conditions, select appropriate protective systems, conduct daily inspections, and implement safe excavation procedures. The curriculum covers sloping, benching, shoring, shielding, trench boxes, access and egress requirements, utility location, atmospheric testing, emergency response planning, and regulatory compliance. Practical examples and real-world scenarios help participants confidently apply OSHA requirements to reduce workplace risks and improve excavation safety performance.
Upon successful completion of the Certified Managing Excavation Hazard Technician (CMEH) course, participants will possess the knowledge and practical skills necessary to identify excavation hazards, implement protective systems, support competent person responsibilities, ensure OSHA compliance, and create safer trenching and excavation operations across construction projects.
