Course Description

The IASHEP Certified Machine Guarding Specialist - Trainer (CMGS - Trainer) course is a comprehensive 4-day professional training program designed to equip participants with the knowledge and practical skills needed to recognize, evaluate, and control machine hazards in industrial workplaces. This course prepares safety professionals, compliance officers, technical instructors, maintenance personnel, and training managers to deliver effective machine guarding training and support compliance with OSHA regulations, ANSI standards, and ISO requirements. Participants will learn how to identify machine hazards, conduct risk assessments using ANSI B11.TR3, measure safe opening distances, design and install machine guards, and implement effective safeguarding solutions for a wide range of machinery. The course also covers specific guarding techniques for milling, drilling, boring, metalworking, hydraulic punch presses, bandsaws, spot welders, and more. Practical instruction focuses on guard design, fabrication, installation, and the application of Lockout/Tagout, electrical safety requirements (NFPA 79), and ANSI/ISO standards. Upon successful completion, participants will be certified to train others in machine guarding principles and practices. This is not an OSHA or OSHA Training Institute Education Center (OTIEC) Level Training program.

What You'll Learn

• Upon successful completion of the Certified Machine Guarding Specialist - Trainer (CMGS - Trainer) course, participants will be able to:
• Understand OSHA regulations for machine guarding, including 1910 Subpart O requirements.
• Conduct risk assessments using ANSI B11.TR3 methodology.
• Measure safe opening distances to prevent operator exposure to hazards.
• Identify and select appropriate safeguard types based on machine type and application.
• Design and install fixed, interlocked, adjustable, and self-adjusting guards.
• Apply best practices for machine guard design, material selection, and installation.
• Recognize hazards associated with milling, drilling, boring, belt sanders, disk sanders, and spindle sanders.
• Implement guarding solutions for metalworking machines, including mechanical power presses, hydraulic presses, and press brakes.
• Guard hydraulic punch presses and high-pressure machinery safely.
• Apply ANSI standards for conveyors, lasers, ladders, and other equipment types.
• Understand ISO international safety standards for machinery and electromagnetic compatibility.
• Guard horizontal and vertical bandsaws, spot welders, and other specialized equipment.
• Fabricate and install custom machine guards.
• Implement Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) procedures per OSHA 1910.147.
• Apply electrical safety requirements per NFPA 79 for industrial machinery.
• Understand ANSI B11 standards and ISO/TS 15066 for robotic systems and collaborative robots.
• Design and apply Type A and Type B gates.
• Train others effectively in machine guarding principles and practices.
• Deliver effective machine guarding training programs as a certified trainer.
• Maintain trainer certification through periodic refresher examinations.
