Course Description

Each year in the United States, falls account for the greatest number of fatalities in the construction industry. In 2004, the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) reported that 1,224 construction workers died on the job, with approximately 36 percent of those fatalities resulting from falls. In addition to the loss of life, the cost of medical care and related expenses for fall-related injuries creates a significant financial burden for the construction industry.

Fall accidents often occur due to multiple contributing factors, including unstable working surfaces, improper use of fall protection equipment, environmental conditions, and human error. Studies show that the proper use of guardrail systems, fall arrest systems, safety nets, covers, and restraint or positioning device systems can prevent many fall-related injuries and deaths. This course is designed to help identify, evaluate, prevent, and protect employees from the harmful effects of fall hazards at construction work sites.
