Course Description

This course is intended for individuals who will be teaching the Bloodborne Pathogens Standard to an adult audience. Students will learn presentation skills and the principles of teaching adults. It is recommended that students attend the one-day Bloodborne Pathogen course or have some familiarity with the topic of Certified Bloodborne Pathogens before attending this course. Students will be required to develop and present a 30-minute training program during this course.

Individuals may be at risk if they handle human blood products, such as whole blood, plasma, serum, platelets, or white cells. They are also at risk if they handle human body fluids such as semen, cerebrospinal fluid, vaginal secretions, joint fluid, pleural fluid, peritoneal fluid, pericardial fluid, or amniotic fluid. (Note: human secretions that do not contain blood, such as urine, feces, vomit, tears, sweat, sputum, nasal secretions, and saliva, are not covered.)

Additional risks include working with animals, such as primates infected with hepatitis B or other bloodborne pathogens, or performing tasks where such animals are housed. Handling unfixed human tissue, organs, or primary cell strains (e.g., tissues not preserved in alcohol or formaldehyde) also poses a risk. Similarly, working with the hepatitis B virus or other bloodborne pathogens, or with preparations containing these pathogens, increases exposure potential.

Workers are also at risk when handling blood, blood products, body fluids, or unfixed tissues or organs of animals infected with hepatitis B or other bloodborne pathogens. Handling sharp instruments—such as knives, needles, scalpels, or scissors—used by others working with human blood, body fluids, organs, or tissue, or with similar materials from infected animals, also presents a risk. Entering areas where others work with infected human or animal blood, body fluids, tissues, or organs and performing tasks where these substances may contact the laboratory worker’s unbroken skin, broken skin, or mucous membranes further increases risk.

Finally, performing tasks that could potentially result in exposed skin or mucous membranes coming into contact with human or animal blood, body fluids, organs, or tissues infected with hepatitis B or other bloodborne pathogens constitutes occupational risk. If your answer is YES to any of these scenarios, you are considered to be at occupational risk of contracting HBV or other bloodborne pathogens.
